Jamie Lee Curtis’s Parents Were Hollywood Royalty: All About Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis was born to not one, but two famous parents. As the daughter of actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, the Scarpetta star was part of a Hollywood dynasty well before she became a renowned leading lady in her own right. 

The late power couple married in 1951. They welcomed their first daughter, Kelly, in 1956, with Jamie joining the family in 1958. Leigh and Tony divorced in 1962, when Jamie was just 4 years old. Nevertheless, she recalled having a “normal childhood” in a 2021 interview with the Golden Globe Awards.

“I went to school, I had friends, we played, we did everything that a kid does. It was really a normal childhood, which is wonderful, because no matter what you do, then you have a substantial base in your life to go away from, so that, like any plant or anything, you can go around and grow, look and investigate, but you still have that root,” she said.

As she grew and investigated the world, the Halloween star found that acting was her calling. Her parents’ names did help her get her foot in the door, a fact she’ll readily admit. She’s previously joked about being “an OG Nepo Baby” on Instagram, writing, “It’s curious how we immediately make assumptions and snide remarks that someone related to someone else who is famous in their field for their art, would somehow have no talent whatsoever. I have come to learn that is simply not true.”

When she won her first Oscar—an honor her parents came close to, but never achieved—Jamie gave Leigh and Tony an emotional shoutout. “My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories,” she said tearfully at the end of her acceptance speech, adding, “I just won an Oscar!”

A chance meeting at an RKO Pictures cocktail party had then-newcomed Tony head over heels for buzzy starlet Leigh. According to Laurence Leamer’s 2023 book Hitchcock’s Blondes, excerpted in Vanity Fair, Leigh was equally enamored by the actor. She described him as a “devastatingly handsome young man—beautiful really—with black unruly hair, large sensitive eyes fringed by long dark lashes—and an irresistible personality.”

They married in Connecticut in June 1951, per Leamer. Tony was Leigh’s third husband; she was his first wife. While they projected the veneer of a perfect couple, career pressures and personality clashes led to conflict behind closed doors. In a 2023 SAG Awards acceptance speech, Jamie said “I’m wearing the wedding ring that my father gave my mother. They hated each other…by the end of it. But my sister Kelly and I were born from love.”

After their 1962 divorce, both went on to marry other people. Tony was romantically linked to Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe before he married Christine Kaufmann. They welcomed two daughters before divorcing. In 1968, he wed Leslie Allen. They welcomed two sons, divorcing in 1982. The Some Like It Hot actor was later married to Andrea Savio from 1984 to 1992, Lisa Deutsch from 1993 to 1994, and Jill Vandenberg from 1998 until his death in 2010.

Leigh, meanwhile, married stockbroker Robert Brandt in 1962. They were together until her death in 2004. “I come from an immediate family of 12 marriages. So my joke [is], I’m still married to my first husband,” Jamie quipped of her 40-plus-year marriage to Christopher Guest in a 2025 appearance on 60 Minutes.

They were both Oscar-nominated actors.

Before Jamie was known as a scream queen, her mother helped define the archetype with her Academy Award-nominated performance as Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Her ‘60s success streak continued with The Manchurian Candidate and Bye Bye Birdie, cementing her superstar status. During her marriage to Tony, Leigh also co-produced several films through their joint company, Curtleigh Productions.

Tony, meanwhile, found stardom with early ‘50s action films and comedies (even co-starring with Leigh in 1953’s Houdini), but achieved wider fame in the second half of the decade. He received a Best Actor Oscar nod for The Defiant Ones, as did his co-star, Sidney Poitier. Paul Newman was also in the race that year, but they all lost to David Niven at the 1958 ceremony.

Leigh appeared in two of Jamie’s films, but Tony never did.

As Jamie’s career flourished, she and Leigh went from mother and daughter to co-stars. First, they both appeared in John Carpenter’s The Fog in 1980. Almost 20 years later, Leigh had a cameo in the aptly named Halloween H2O: 20 Years Later, which starred her daughter. They’d also played mother and daughter on an episode of Love Boat in 1978.

Jamie never acted alongside her father. In a 2010 appearance on The Talk (via the Los Angeles Times), she said of Tony, “He was not a father and he was not interested in being a father. Now, by the way, that’s not a slam against him. He was very clear that he was not.”

The actress has remembered them on several occasions.

Jamie’s mother, Leigh, died at her Beverly Hills home in 2004 after a private battle with vasculitis. Her father died of cardiac arrest at his Henderson, Nevada home in 2010. In the years since their passing, Jamie has paid tribute to her parents in awards speeches and on social media.

She shared a black-and-white photo of the couple to her Instagram in 2022, writing, “Once in a while when their images find me unexpectedly, I’m caught by not only their extreme beauty but their deep love and ambition.” 

Reflecting on their several divorces, she continued, “There are only a couple reminders to me that I was born from love and not resentment, competition, jealousy and rancor which are the cornerstones of any unpleasant divorce. I also forget that they were famous and loved worldwide.”

She also discussed the concept of “surpassing” her parents when she won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once. “You know, I think about surpassing my parents, which I have, emotionally,” she shared during her 2025 60 Minutes interview. “I have surpassed my parents with sobriety. My mother was restricted by what the industry wanted from her, and expected from her, and would allow from her…And so I have, I don’t wanna say, surpassed them, but I, I have freedom.”

In 2026, Jamie shared a special tribute to Leigh by posting a video to Instagram on what would have been her mother’s 99th birthday. In the clip, she flipped through photos representing the multi-hyphenate’s various accomplishments. “Love And Misses Janet Leigh! You Would Have Been A Great Great-Grandmother!” Jamie captioned the heartwarming post.
