Sunnyside Shooting: 3 Women Injured After Gunfire Erupts Outside Convenience Store
Three women were hospitalized after a shooting outside a convenience store in Houston’s Sunnyside neighborhood, prompting a major police response and an active search for the person responsible.
The shooting happened Tuesday night near the 9100 block of Scott Street, close to Sunnyside Park. According to Houston police, two women in their mid-30s were standing in the store’s parking lot when they were each struck once in the arm. A third woman, who was sitting inside her vehicle, was shot in the hand.
Police Respond After Dozens of Shots
Officers in the area reportedly heard roughly 30 rapid gunshots. Investigators believe the gunfire came from a grassy area across the street from the convenience store.
Police said the speed of the gunfire led investigators to suspect that a rifle or another automatic-style weapon may have been used, although authorities had not confirmed the exact weapon involved. One round also struck the convenience store, hitting a cooler inside the building. Fortunately, no customers or employees inside the store were reported injured.
The third victim was able to leave the scene in her vehicle before stopping on Vera Lou Street, where she was located and received assistance.
All Three Victims Expected to Recover
Despite the frightening circumstances, authorities said the three women were transported to local hospitals and were expected to be okay.
Police quickly searched the surrounding area, including with a helicopter, but the suspected shooter was not located. Investigators believe the person responsible may have fled on foot before possibly getting into a vehicle.
Investigation Continues
At this stage, police have not released a confirmed description or identity of the shooter. Authorities also have not established a motive for the attack.
The incident has left residents concerned, particularly because of the number of shots fired in an area where people were shopping and moving through the neighborhood.
