US President Donald Trump has used the Republican midterms convention to clarify statements he made earlier this week regarding his actions on the morning of September 11th 2001.

Initially, Trump claimed that he was "dragged out" of the rubble by the New York Fire Department after he went down there to help.

Those statements attracted criticism for being false, and Trump has been accused of making similar claims in the past.

Today at the convention in Texas, Trump explained that he was actually the fireman that was doing the rescuing.

"They deputised me, I was down there hauling people out of the rubble. I had them deputise my whole team. We had Joey down there. Pauly. Leo. Pauly was great but he was very fat. He would've been too fat to be a fireman otherwise. It was always a dream of Pauly, he's a great guy. but very fat. It was always his dream to be a fireman but everyone said, 'Pauly! You're too fat!' and he was, he ate too much, but he was a great guy. Still is, I think he's living in Long Island now,"
