Sudden calf pain at night can feel alarming, but it is usually not dangerous. “Night cramps are common and often linked to everyday factors rather than something dangerous.” They affect many people during sleep and are short-lived, typically easing on their own within minutes even though the pain can feel intense.

Common causes include dehydration, muscle fatigue, and mineral deficiencies. “They’re frequently associated with dehydration, muscle fatigue, or low levels of key minerals like magnesium and potassium.” Long standing periods, certain medications, and sleeping with feet pointed downward can also increase risk, making muscles tighten during rest.
